A call to action: Considering the post-pandemic psychosomatic impacts on children

Abstract

This perspective article issues a call to action for teachers, counselors, school boards, pediatricians, parents, and researchers to address the psychosomatic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on children. It is the author’s perspective that, although children are increasingly treated for physical and mental health concerns in the post-COVID era, the psychosomatic interconnectedness of their symptoms is often overlooked, despite its importance for effective treatment. Evidence indicates that the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to a rise in psychosomatic symptoms, particularly among children and adolescents. Nevertheless, many educational and healthcare stakeholders—such as school boards, educational personnel, pediatricians, and other key figures—lack adequate training to recognize and understand this post-pandemic psychosomatic interplay. This call to action seeks to support practitioners, parents, counselors, school administrators, and other educational stakeholders in developing a more integrated approach to effectively support this vulnerable population.
