Abstract

Post-operative pain (POP) is a common adverse event following surgery, requiring the use of single or multimodal analgesia for its management. Poor pain management can influence both the physical and psychological functions of patients undergoing surgery, such as satisfaction, physical function, quality of life, recovery time, hospitalization, post-operative opioid use, and the risks of chronic pain. This study mainly aimed to assess the impact of POP management on patients’ satisfaction following cardiovascular and orthopedic surgery and to evaluate the influence of non-medical support on perceived POP. A pilot cross-sectional study was conducted from July to September 2019 among adult Lebanese patients undergoing elective cardiovascular or orthopedic surgery in a single public hospital in Beirut, using a convenience sample of 50 participants. High levels of physicians’ conformity (94% and 96% for the choice of the drug and the duration of treatment, respectively) and patient satisfaction (78% and 18% expressed high and moderate satisfaction, respectively) were observed throughout the perioperative period. A low satisfaction score was significantly associated with gender, increased pain intensity, and encouragement to use non-medical treatment options to manage pain. Patients’ education on self-management of their pain and adequate pain management is crucial to improving their quality of life following their hospitalization. Although POP remains a major challenge faced by healthcare professionals and patients, regular pain assessment is essential, considering different patient satisfaction predictors.
