Sustainable and Next-Generation Biofabrication: Green Materials, 3D/4D Bioprinting, and Translational Biomedical Applications

Biofabrication is rapidly evolving from conventional 3D printing toward sustainable, multifunctional, and clinically relevant manufacturing of living and biomimetic systems. This Special Issue will highlight emerging strategies that integrate green materials, advanced bioinks, additive manufacturing, and biological engineering to address sustainability and translational challenges in biomedical applications. Contributions are invited on renewable and biodegradable polymers, natural and waste-derived biomaterials, low-waste and energy-efficient fabrication, novel 3D/4D bioprinting technologies, multimaterial and volumetric printing, AI-assisted design and process optimization, and biofabricated models for tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, organ-on-chip systems, drug testing, and personalized healthcare. Studies addressing printability, mechanical and biological performance, scalability, lifecycle considerations, circular-economy principles, standardization, and clinical translation are particularly encouraged. The Special Issue aims to connect materials science, bioengineering, manufacturing, and sustainability perspectives to advance responsible next-generation biofabrication.
