The College of Mechanical and Vehicle Engineering, Hunan University, with its origins tracing back to the Department of Mechanics established in 1908, is one of the oldest and most prestigious colleges at Hunan University. Upholding the motto "Seeking Truth from Facts and Daring to Be Pioneering," the College is dedicated to advancing education, research, and innovation in mechanical engineering, vehicle engineering, intelligent manufacturing, energy and power engineering, engineering mechanics, industrial engineering, and aerospace engineering. The College has established a comprehensive education and research system spanning undergraduate, master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral programs. It offers first-level doctoral programs in Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics, eight second-level doctoral programs, two postdoctoral research stations, eleven master's programs, and seven undergraduate majors including Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation, Vehicle Engineering, Energy and Power Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering, and Intelligent Vehicle Engineering. Mechanical Engineering is a National First-Level Key Discipline and a "World-Class Discipline" of the Ministry of Education, with two provincial key disciplines in Hunan Province. In the 2026 China Graduate Education Subject Ranking published by nseac.com, Hunan University's Mechanical Engineering discipline was rated 5★, ranking 10th nationwide among 295 institutions. In the US News 2025–2026 World University Subject Rankings, Mechanical Engineering was ranked 8th globally.
