Announcement: Webinar on Innovation in Alloys for Metal Additive Manufacturing
28 September 2026

Webinar on Alloy Innovation in Metal Additive Manufacturing

Metal additive manufacturing breaks the inherent limitations of traditional material preparation and processing. It enables performance upgrading of conventional alloys and provides a feasible solution for manufacturing complex components of high-performance intermetallics, driving simultaneous breakthroughs in composition design, microstructure regulation and engineering applications.

Chaired by Dr. Jinglong Su from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, City University of Hong Kong, this webinar features two invited experts:

Dr. Qiyang Tan’s presentation focuses on process control and performance enhancement for carbon steels produced via additive manufacturing. By employing laser-based additive manufacturing and utilizing in-situ heat treatment of the micro-scale molten pool, a uniform martensitic/bainitic microstructure can be achieved. Adjusting the energy density allows for the precise tuning of the phase composition—balancing martensite and bainite—to attain performance levels comparable to certain low- or medium-alloy steels. Additionally, regional process control enables the creation of gradient heterogeneous structures.

Profile: Dr. Qiyang Tan is currently a Research Fellow at The University of Queensland, Australia. Dr. Tan obtained his Bachelor's degree in Materials Science and Engineering from South China University of Technology in 2014 and his PhD from the University of Queensland in 2018. Dr Qiyang Tan's research expertise are in the additive manufacturing of metals and MAX phases, high-temperature oxidation of metals, alloy development, thin film characterization, mechanical properties of metals, grain refinement and crystallography. Dr. Tan has published over 80 papers in prestigious international SCI-indexed journals, such as Nature Communications, Journal of Materials Science & Technology, Journal of the European Ceramic Society, Materials Characterization, Additive Manufacturing. He has been ranked on the 2026 World's Top 2% Scientists list.

Prof. Zhou Yinghao discuss the compositional design and additive manufacturing of intermetallic compounds. Drawing on high-entropy alloy design strategies, he and his team have developed chemically complex intermetallic compounds by incorporating multiple elements that share the same lattice sites. Using laser powder bed fusion, they successfully fabricated these materials with high precision, high density, and no cracking. These chemically complex intermetallics exhibit a combination of high tensile strength and high uniform elongation—a performance profile previously unreported for additively manufactured intermetallic compounds. Introduction.

Profile: Prof. Zhou Yinghao is currently a professor and doctoral supervisor at the Harbin Institute of Technology, a recipient of a National Young Top Talents, and a Humboldt Research Fellow, he has been ranked on the 2026 World's Top 2% Scientists list. His research focuses on the design of structural materials with high strength, toughness, and radiation resistance (including high-entropy alloys, intermetallic compounds, titanium alloys, and aluminum alloys); AI-driven development of high-performance materials; and laser/electron beam additive manufacturing. Professor Zhou has published over 80 SCI-indexed papers in prestigious international journals such as Nature Communications, Acta Materialia, Journal of Materials Science & Technology, Rare Metals, Additive Manufacturing, Materials Today, and Corrosion Science. His work includes two highly cited papers and one cover article. He serves as a specially appointed editor/reviewer for TMR and as a youth editorial board member for the journal Rare Metals.

This webinar covers key aspects of metal additive manufacturing—ranging from the enhancement of traditional materials to the development of novel alloys—and will provide participants with insights into the latest research trends and highly innovative technical approaches. This seminar series is dedicated to fostering an open, high-level academic exchange platform for researchers, engineers, and industry professionals working in the fields of materials science and advanced manufacturing.
