Webinar on Advances in Advanced Metal Additive Manufacturing Technologies

Metal additive manufacturing (AM) is fundamentally reshaping the development and production of critical metal components for high-end equipment. The frontier has shifted from achieving basic printability to the deep integration of high performance, high reliability, and scalable production. Central to this progress are the rational design of alloys tailored for non-equilibrium metallurgy and the precise manipulation of force–thermal multi-field coupling in high-energy-beam processes.
Chaired by Prof. Xin Lin from the School of Mechanical Engineering, Wuhan University of Science and Technology, this webinar features two invited experts:
Prof. Chaolin Tan will present the paradigm evolution of alloy design for AM. He will trace the trajectory from direct use of commercial alloys and elemental modification, through empirical design, to data-driven, AI-assisted approaches, and will demonstrate how the fourth-generation paradigm—deeply integrating AM metallurgical characteristics with machine learning—overcomes persistent challenges such as high crack susceptibility and poor printability.
Prof. Yaowu Hu will discuss the manufacturing effects of intense pulsed laser-induced plasma expansion shock. His talk will cover the force effects generated by high-intensity pulsed laser irradiation, the mechanical response of metals, and the resulting performance enhancements. Examples include laser shock peening of hot droplets and innovative applications in additive and micro/nano manufacturing, offering a novel force–thermal synergy strategy for precision manufacturing and surface engineering.
