The JCBP's 3ed Live Lecture of the Editorial Board: Common Mental Disorders in Old age: Depression, Dementia, and Delirium

The Journal of Clinical and Basic Psychosomatics will hold this live lecture titled "Common Mental Disorders in Old age: Depression, Dementia, and Delirium" on Bilibili and WeChat Channels at 20:00 on May 22, 2025 (GMT+08:00).

With the accelerating process of global ageing, mental disorders in old age have become an important issue in the field of public health. Depression, dementia, and delirium, as high-incidence diseases among the elderly population, are often ignored or misdiagnosed due to their complex clinical manifestations and overlapping symptoms. Geriatric depression, as a hidden emotional crisis, has a significantly increasing incidence with age. Its symptoms are often atypical, manifesting as somatization symptoms or cognitive decline besides low mood and loss of interest, which can be easily confused with physical diseases. Dementia, an irreversible cognitive decline, is mainly represented by Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. Its core symptoms include memory impairment, disorientation, and decreased executive function, with personality changes and behavioural abnormalities in the later stages. Delirium is characterized by acute confusion and fluctuating consciousness disturbances. Typical symptoms include attention deficit, disordered thinking, abnormal perception, and reversed circadian rhythm. Its triggers are often multiple factors such as infection, metabolic disorders, drug side effects, or postoperative states. Although there are significant differences in the pathogenesis and treatment strategies of depression, dementia, and delirium in old age, they often carry comorbidity risks. Depression can accelerate the progression of dementia, while dementia patients are more prone to delirium. In clinical practice, it is essential to focus on early screening, implement multidisciplinary collaborative management, and combine individualized interventions to improve patients' quality of life, reduce the burden of care, and provide more precise support for mental health in old age.

We are honored to invite Director Chen Qu, the Deputy Director of the Organization and Personnel Department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, the Deputy Director of Geriatrics, Associate Professor, Master's Supervisor, and Youth Editorial Board Member of JCBP, as the keynote speaker for this conference. Dr. Lei Cai, the Associate Researcher of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Member of the Human Ethics Committee of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Editorial Board Member of JCBP, will serve as the host. We sincerely welcome scholars to actively participate in this academic live lecture.
