Dr. Hongxu Lu obtained his BSc and MSc degrees in Biology from the Ocean University of China, and his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Tsukuba, Japan, in 2009. Then he worked as a postdoc researcher at the National Institute for Materials Science of Japan under the supervision of Prof. Guoping Chen. In 2012, he joined Prof. Martina Stenzel’s group at the University of New South Wales as a research associate. From 2015 to 2018, he worked as an ARC DECRA research fellow at the School of Chemistry, UNSW. Before joining SICCAS, he worked with Prof Dayong Jin at the Institute of Biomedical Materials and Devices at the University of Technology Sydney. Dr. Lu’s research focuses on the development of 3D in vitro cellular models, such as organoids, spheroids, and tissue-engineered constructs, combining 3D cell culture, stem cell biology, biomaterials, and microfluidic technologies, for biomedical applications. To date, Dr. Lu has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal papers, including Advanced Materials, Advanced Science, Biomaterials, Biofabrication, Lab on a Chip, and Acta Biomaterialia.

Before his current assignment, he served in several prestigious institutions in various parts of the world, including the University of Punjab in Lahore, Seoul National University, the University of Strathclyde, the National University of Singapore, the University of Cincinnati, and Sulaiman Alrajihi University in KSA. He has served on various Stem Cell and Gene Therapy Projects Funded by NIH (USA) and NMRC (Singapore) as a principal investigator (PI), co-PI, and Collaborator. He has served on the editorial boards and has been invited to review panels for several respected international journals. His research focuses on using, either alone or in combination, DNA, miRNAs, and stem cells as “living bio-drugs,” a topic that has gained popularity in regenerative medicine. He has extensively published on the cellular and subcellular preconditioning of stem cells and their conditioned media for cell-free therapy. He has extensive experience in combinatorial cell based gene therapy. Professor Wayne Lee obtained his PhD in Pharmacology from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 2009 and subsequently pursued postdoctoral training in the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at CUHK, focusing on cell therapy. He has published over 127 articles in peer-reviewed international journals (Scopus H-index 37), including 25 as a corresponding author in top-tier journals such as Arthritis & Rheumatology, Cell Death & Differentiation, Science Advances, EClinicalMedicine, Aging Cell, and Bioactive Materials. His research has received funding support from the GRF, HMRF, ITF, InnoHK, and the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR). Dr. Lee serves on the Youth Committee of the Journal of Orthopaedic Translation and as a reviewer for international journals and renowned research societies, including the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) and ASBMR. He is currently the Co-Director of the Joint Scoliosis Research Society of CUHK and Nanjing University. He has served as the Site Authorized Person of the ATP GMP Center at the Hong Kong Institute of Biotechnology from 2022 to 2025, assisting in obtaining the first local institution-led manufacturing license for ATP, and has released several CAR-T products for local clinical trials. His research focuses on three major areas of orthopaedics with significant clinical relevance: (a) Elucidating the mechanisms underlying disease progression in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) and developing novel prognostic models for curve prediction and personalized interventions. (b) Investigating the roles of understudied osteocytes in age-related musculoskeletal problems. (c) Developing GMP-compliant advanced cell therapy solutions for musculoskeletal disorders.
