Bernd Kaina obtained his Ph.D. in genetics in 1976 from the University of Halle, Germany. He completed his postdoctoral training at the Institute of Genetics and Plant Breeding in Gatersleben and continued his studies on DNA repair at the Department of Molecular Biology in Leiden, Netherlands, at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg and, as a Heisenberg fellow, at the Department of Genetics of the Nuclear Research Center in Karlsruhe, Germany. In 1993 he was appointed full professor at the Institute of Toxicology of the University of Mainz, Germany, where he was head of an independent research group and, later, appointed director of the Institute of Toxicology (ITOX) that he chaired from 2003 to 2018. Currently, he is senior professor and group leader at this institute. His research program is aimed at elucidating the mechanisms of DNA repair, DNA damage signaling, mutagenesis, cancer formation, senescence and death of cells exposed to genotoxicants, radiation and anticancer drugs. In his translational research programme, he is especially interested in mechanisms of apoptosis, senescence and resistance of glioblastoma and other cancer cells to alkylating drugs and the repair of critical DNA lesions. He also studied the mechanism and benefit of TCM drugs such as artesunate and curcumin. He is author of more than 400 scientific publications and book chapters and serves as editorial board member and reviewer for many scientific journals. Statistics: PubMed 320 listed papers, HI: 79. The research interest of Dr. Hui lies solely on Adipose Tissue – a highly plastic organ in our body. We are using genetically engineered mouse models, primary cells/tissues and human iPS-derived adipocytes as model systems. By adopting state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary approaches, the goal of our laboratory is to understand the molecular basis of adipose tissue remodelling and its physiological relevance in obesity and cardio-metabolic diseases. Ultimately we seek to develop biomedicine that can “re-educate” the adipose tissue.
