Theoretical and Practical Innovations in Relation to China's Urban Regeneration

Special Issue Information

This special issue aims to address both the latest theoretical and practical developments in terms of urban regeneration in China and other countries of similar backgrounds. In particular, it focuses on: (1) The new roles played by urban regeneration in helping the development and transformation of Chinese cities; (2) The determinants that restrict the progress of urban regeneration at institutional, technological and conceptual levels; And (3) the emerging original urban regeneration theory and modes of practice, and their differences and similarities with the existing western knowledge system regarding urban regeneration. In order to achieve these objectives, this special issue will therefore discuss theoretical and practical innovations relating to China’s urban regeneration in a multidisciplinary way that offers insight into how local experience can strengthen the worldwide knowledge system about urban regeneration. It may include but is not limited to the following topics:


  1. The interactions between different stages of urbanisation and urban regeneration in China;
  2. The institutional construction of urban regeneration and policy innovation at national and subnational levels;
  3. Protection of historic cities and urban regeneration;
  4. Reform of China’s urban planning management system for urban regeneration;
  5. The exploration of low-carbon cities, smart cities and resilient cities in the process of urban regeneration;
  6. The transition to multi-subject governance in relation to China's urban regeneration;
  7. The development of building technology, infrastructure technology and IT technology in relation to China’s urban regeneration;
  8. The characteristics of urban regeneration in China from an international comparative perspective;
  9. Developments relating and impacts of urban regeneration, transport and urban planning.
