Abstract

In this paper reference has been given to the national bodies involved in environmental pollution, with especial emphasis on air problems. The scope of work of some of these organizations and the governing Acts are also explored. Specific attention has been paid to the previous and current activities of Iranian Oil Industry with respect to safeguarding the environment.

The annual means of some of the measured pollutants in the vicinity of Tehran Refinery for the period of 1993 to 1998 are given. Even though the sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and oxidants do not exceed the standards, the soiling index, suspended particulate matter, dust fall and hydrocarbons do.
