Editorial Process
Every Artificial Intelligence in Health submission will be pre-screened by the Academic Editors to ensure adherence to the journal’s scope, editorial policies, ethical standards (including human/animal research compliance), data policies, and manuscript formatting requirements.
Peer Review Process
An Academic Editor (who may be the Editor-in-Chief, an Editorial Board Member, or a Guest Editor) is assigned to each submission. The Academic Editor oversees the peer review process, assigns reviewers, and makes the final editorial decision based on reviewer feedback. Submitted manuscripts and associated materials are treated as confidential. Access is restricted to handling editors, Academic Editors, reviewers, and production staff involved in the peer-review and publication process.
Supplementary materials that directly support the scientific content of the manuscript are subject to peer review. Administrative or confidential documents (e.g., ethics approvals, consent forms, or other author-identifiable materials) are not included in the peer-review process.
External Peer Review: All primary research articles (original research, clinical trials, observational studies, case studies) must undergo external peer review, typically involving two or more independent external reviewers who are not members of the Editorial Board. This ensures independent evaluation and meets indexing requirements for external peer review.
Reviewer Selection: Reviewers are selected by the Academic Editor from external experts, provided that:
- The submission was not contributed by the Academic Editor, and their involvement presents no conflict of interest;
- The Academic Editor has demonstrated expertise in the subject matter of the assigned submission.
For primary research articles, the review panel typically includes:
- Two or more independent reviewers who are not members of the Editorial Board. Editorial Board Members may be consulted only when additional expertise is required and no conflicts of interest exist.
Conflict of Interest Management: Academic Editors and reviewers must declare any conflicts of interest and must not be involved in the handling or review of manuscripts where such conflicts exist, including submissions from the same institution, collaborators, or personal/professional relationships.
Editorial Decisions
Based on review reports and recommendations, the Academic Editor makes one of the following decisions: accept, minor revision, major revision, or reject.
Revision files include the revised manuscript, title page and back matter, cover letter, and response letter. Revisions undergo editorial pre-screening and reviewer evaluation.
The journal reserves the right to reject a manuscript at any stage prior to publication, including after acceptance, if concerns arise regarding the integrity, ethics, or validity of the work.
Post-Acceptance
The peer review process is complete once a submission is accepted for publication. Accepted papers proceed to copy-editing, typesetting, and proofreading before online publication.
